La Roche-sur-Foron up to the 18th century

In the 17th century, in the wake of the Catholic Counter Reform and Saint-François de Sales, La Roche saw the arrival of 2 religious orders. First, the Capuchin Monks installed in 1617, on the site of the castle of the Duke of Savoy, the ruined buildings used in the construction of the monastery.
The second, that of the "Révérendes Dames Bernardines", were housed in the castle of "Saix" in 1626, before constructing a new convent in the "Faubourg Saint Bernard" in 1670. Today this building houses the "college and lycée Sainte Marie", and its chapel containing a magnificent reredos is in the process of restoration.
Then the Spanish occupation of 1742 to 1748 resulted in the destruction of the battlements and filling in of the moats. In 1792, the arrival of the revolutionary French Army tolled the knell of the Sardinian Monarchy: the territories of "Savoie" became the 84th French Department of Mont-Blanc, and later the Department of Leman. These territories were annexed to France for 23 years.
