The district of Plain-Château This is the most ancient and picturesque district of the Medieval City. We know that in 1316, before the construction of the 2nd wall, there stood, on the "Planum Castri", the three castles which safeguarded its defence; the castle of the Counts of Geneva, the castle of "Echelle" and the castle of "Saix". The ramparts which encircle Plain-Château have 4 gates, of which the Falquet and Saint-Martin are authentic relics of this period. Also, in evidence here are noble mansions of the 15th, 16th and 17th century, conspicuous by their façades and their lintelled windows. The grain stone measures of 1558 are evidence of the commercial past of La Roche and the site of its ancient grain market. |
