A Burgundian necropolis (V-VI century) unearthed at "La Balme" - 1 km from the town - confirms the presence of very ancient human habitation, which was certainly the hub of an enviable strategic location. But the first documents relating to La Roche date back to 1032. |

Between 1033 and 1219 La Roche was on numerous occasions, the Capital of the County of Geneva. The original village was situated on a platform of rock slightly overlooking the valley of the "Arve". Protected by the First Wall, it was flanked by 3 castles, of which, that of the Count of Geneva was responsible for assuring its defence.
However, the walled city soon became congested, and so the church had to be constructed outside its walls, in the 12th century.
